Early History

Rottweilers were registered in Finland as early as 1920. The first recorded Rottweiler was a bitch called LUTZI av MEDESTEIN, bred by Lieutenant A. Winge and owned by Mrs L. Winge. She was sired by Nero av Aso out of Gyllis-Lutzi.

The first recorded male was HAMMARBY’S PUCK (King av Aso – Dolly av Medestein), who was born on 1st of March  1923. He was owned by Sea Captain Gustaf Apelgren. The first Rottweiler litter was born in Finland in 1933. Sired by LINDHAGAS GERO, the dam was LINDHAGAS BELLA, owned by Mrs Moen Ullberg of the Kiikkuniemen prefix.

The Finnish Rottweiler Club was founded in April 1946. To begin with, it was a breed club in it’s own right, but a sub-division of a bigger working dog club. By the end on 1946 the club had 33 members, who owned a total of 26 Rottweilers.

Establishing the breed

Initially, nearly all the Rottweilers were imported from Sweden. The founding of the Finnish Rottweiler Club marked an important starting point for breeding in Finland. Breeders had to overcome early difficulties, particularly lack of knowledge regarding the pedigrees of their dogs, and possible faults and weaknesses in imported lines.

As the breed began to grow in numbers in Finland, vom HEIDENMOOR emerged as the most important and influential kennel. In 1945 a Rottweiler bitch, SONNBOS HAPPY (Tell Vonden Hackerbruecke – Nizy) was imported from Sweden in whelp to Ch. RAJ. The Rottweilers from the resulting litter included BELZEBUB and BARRY, who were to form the foundation of the kennel HEIDENMOOR breeding programme. The prefix was given to Maria and Olavi Pasanen in 1949.

In the sixties the number of Rottweiler kennels gradually increased. They included: Attalos, von Birkenweiler, vom Feuerwald, Finnweilers, von Heidesee, Joukonheimon, Kaisukan,  Katajiston, Katweilers, Negusheim, Onnimannin and Vahvan-Tassun. Some of these kennels are still going strong today.

The current scene

Breeding is still on a small scale in Finland, with the majority on kennels keeping a couple of bitches living with the family. A number on kennels, formed in the last few years have achieved considerable success. They include Finnjäntans, Fold Face’s, Heizelwood, Karmossen, Ukko-Pekan, Vuorenpeikon and Yörnilän.

The Finnish Rottweiler Club has grown as the popularity of the Rottweiler has become more widespread. There are now about 3000 members. There are 12 sub-divisions of the parent club, plus three independent Rottweiler clubs that organise training for Working Trials. The southern-most sub-division located in Helsinki and the northern-most in Lapland. Obedience training plays an important part in Finland, as the Rottweiler is very much a dog who lives at home with the family and children.

Pedigrees.

Pedigrees are issued by the National Kennelclub of Finland.

There are different registrations :

ER-register

This register is for dogs, which parent-dogs, three generation backwards, are not all in FCI-country register. Today we have 36 rottweilers in this register.

EJ-register (not for breeding)

The breeder can register a puppy to this register, if he thinks that the puppy has that kind of failure, that puppy is not suitable for breeding. Today we have only one dog in this register.

The national kennelclub is affiliated to the FCI :

Suomen Kennelliitto ry.,

Kamreerintie 8, 02770 Espoo,

Finland.

www.kennelliitto.fi

 It is affiliated to FCI.

Breedingregulations.

The parent-dogs need a pedigree, which is issued by  FCI-country.

The parent-dogs needs HD, ED and eye-control. The results of the controls have no effect to the registeration.

In the beginning of 2006 the parent-dogs can have max. 60 puppies in their lifetime.   An exception can be granted by the breed-committee if 50 % of the dog's progeny has been tested on HD, ED and eyes and at least 15 % participated the character-test or have a result over 240 points from IPO/VPG or northern sports from class 2. In that case progeny up to max. 100 pups can be allowed, never more.

Dogrelated legislation.

Finland does not have a dogrelated legislation.

Activities.

All our sub-locations organize training for obedience and for northern sports.    Almost half of them organice IPO/SchH training too.
